Public Policy

For 130 years, Commerce Lexington Inc. and its predecessors have served as the lead advocate for the Central Kentucky business community at all levels of government. Our ongoing strength and effectiveness resides in the collective focus of some 1,800 members – members who believe in free enterprise, understand the need to forge and readily embrace change, and who work to enhance the power of education to change lives and the economy.

Some 60 Central Ky. Leaders to participate in 2010 Washington, DC Fly-In, July 21-22

Central Kentucky's leaders in business, education and government are once again preparing to travel to Washington, D.C. for the Bluegrass Region's annual D.C. Fly-In presented by Columbia Gas of Kentucky on July 21-22, 2010. This marks the sixth consecutive year that Commerce Lexington Inc. and approximately 60 business leaders and elected officials throughout the Bluegrass Region will make the trip to the nation's Capitol to advocate on behalf of the budgetary, infrastructure and economic development needs of Central Kentucky.

The annual Fly-In represents a unique opportunity for the elected officials, business, education and non-profit leaders throughout Central Kentucky to meet with Kentucky's entire Congressional delegation over a two-day period. Regional leaders are able to have dialogue with Kentucky's federal elected officials regarding the important needs of the Bluegrass Region.

Central Kentucky's annual Fly-In has experienced a great deal of success over the past five years. Those success stories include: Acquiring initial funding for the feasibility study of the I-75 Connector between Nicholasville and Northern Madison County; funding for the Kentucky Blood Center; Newton Pike Extension; the University of Kentucky; Bluegrass Airport; and the Bluegrass Army Depot.

Central Kentucky's priorities for the 2010 Fly-In include advocating on behalf of our region's military installations at Bluegrass Station and the Bluegrass Army Depot, as well as informing our Congressional Delegation about the capital and infrastructure needs of our region's postsecondary institutions, including Eastern Kentucky University, Midway College, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and the University of Kentucky.

Other priorities include advocating for the Ohio River Bridges project; a continued emphasis on Kentucky's water supply; expressing opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act (Card Check); and encouraging Kentucky's delegation to implement a sensible energy strategy that will not place Kentucky at a distinct economic disadvantage with other states.
